EN: I look out over the edge of the valley. It is night time, in my hand a camera, an extension of my eyes.
I hesitate, observing the lights in the distance, at one moment still and the next like dancing flames, darker patches and flashes that run after each other like in snakes’ scales. I bring the camera nearer and look, frame the magic through the lens and take the photo, then take another. I glance restlessly at my skirt hem, fearing the women of the village may think I am a witch, I can almost see a goat’s foot below.
So I hurry down the slope, almost on hand and foot, I follow the patterns of light as I turn the bends. Touching the leaves, the trees, the damp grass, I gradually approach the houses while I go further away from reality. It may be true that only fairy tales recognize that the world, life itself, has a meaning.
I stop to shed my skin, a shudder goes down my spine as I remember the reptile. I discard my travelling clothes without loosing contact with the camera. For a split second I loosen my grip to accustom my eyes to the darkness.
Now I am ready.

EN: As if in a dance I turn in pirouettes, at each turn I take on a new identity.
Now I am a cat, black like the night, my eyes the only sparks of light illuminated like the souls of the village. At the spot where I enter, silently, barely treading the ground, I am invisible to the human eye, but observed with fear by the ghosts of those gone. I find them again in the first house, hanging on the walls. They are sitting in a row, precociously old children, their eyes hardened in such short lives that predict future fatigue and pain. Behind them, rows of women, mothers and sisters, they too distressed before the lens that frames them. I gaze into the gaze of who gazed, I photograph the photograph, I reveal the game of mirrors, infinite duplication.
I move the camera, see a future photo of a lady, a strip of light from the window cuts into her beloved eyes. I frame her again and press the button down. When I let it go, she is there in front of me, young yet elderly, larger than life, in her eyes a long-rooted melancholy and she is watching me. Present and past closely observe each other, with interest but at the same time suspicious: it is the dancer within me that draws them nearer and awakens their identity. The shutter clicks again and this time simultaneously other women appear, they too may be witches, immobile and estranged, with a porcellain dog at their side.

EN: I feel observed, other people watch me from an old frame, close up; a bourgeois girl appears from an oval, I try to imagine the photographer’s face: was it similar to mine? Was it me that, by magic, had come back to where I had already been? I trace the genealogical tree with my fingers, following the different branches of life back in time.
I turn round again, another click. Watching from the cat’s eyes again, I look around with caution, I hear someone approaching. And here is Barbaluf, still ravenous, walking barefoot in the snow, coming fearfully close to the village, condemned as people remember his cannibal father. I dance around and immortalize him, he is desperate but totally unaware of my presence.
Nobody notices me as I stop time again. I pause pitying the soul of the one who should have defended his master: he is still surprised, confused, incapable of accepting the ghost’s light weight.
Not far off, I catch a glimpse of a train of white spirits, moving in the darkness, in flames of sinister light, foreboding ill omens. Now it is me that hides from their gaze, I see them as they go in and out of the houses, almost running, a last whirl of a skirt and I photograph their movements out of focus.

EN: Distressed, I climb the hill again, surrounded by low cloud as if in theater wings, that hide the fatal unreality of reality. What have I come up against? My ancestral fears? The fearsome most hidden past?
From above, again on the edge of the valley, I scrutinize the memory of the one I have brought back to life and sight once more. I catch sight of lights, probably little flames, old souls in the form of nocturnal animals, pitiful once-wicked figures, ready to show me their hollow orbits and goats’ feet to nourish my fears for one last time.
But I feel safe, the journey and the dances have calmed my restlessness. No longer a frightened child, my eyes within the eyes of those gone before, sitting on the edge between the reality of today and the fantasy of the past, I breathe in the night air of the valley.
Finally back in my own clothes, I put the camera on my knees and look through the lens: within I see all the little lights of the village again. As I click I can hear the hiss of the snake, the clopping of an old hoof and can see the slanting eye of the cat. I hold my finger down until all noise disappears. And in one clack re-emerges the peaceful light of the enchanted village.

EN: The artwork Mi affaccio sul bordo della valle (I look out on the edge of the valley) is inspired by the local culture, deeply rooted in the territory, whose transient and ephemeral traces are still preserved today. In this sense, the artist establishes a deep connection with the past tradition and she proposes it in a new form, through a photographic series.
The artist takes up the variety of narrative elements linked to a mythical fabric that sees in the bòte (from the dialect: stories) a symbol of past memories. Thus, she involves the local community to revive some of them, using the village as a backdrop. The images have a dreamlike nature and they refer to episodes still alive in the identity of the community and local tradition. The artist matches to these pictures some nocturnal landscape images, working slightly on the exposure. In this way, she creates unreal and a bit frightful views, as the very essence of these stories, invented to scare listeners, especially children. There are also some photographic material re-photographed in the series to emphasize the connection between the inhabitants of this small village and the fact that all these stories are the result of a collective memory.
